Contact lens technology has improved immensely over the past few years, expanding our options for the correction of vision problems. Multifocal lenses, in particular, have seen and are seeing rapid growth and change.
Multifocal soft contact lenses have two primary uses. One is for adults that need reading glasses or bifocals but have a desire to wear contact lenses instead of glasses. The other is for kids whose eyes are showing progressively worsening myopia, the use of certain designs of multi-focus lenses has been shown to be an effective way to slow the changes of myopic progression.
Children as young as 8 years of age whose eyes are worsening, and adults of all ages who need help with their close work, have the option of using these contact lenses to improve their vision. Recent research shows that multifocal contact lenses can slow myopia progression by 30-50% making this an exciting option.
Additional lens designs are in the works and this area will continue to grow over time, but currently, we have several good lens designs that show varying levels of success in slowing myopic progression.
During your consultation, your doctor will discuss the different lens options available and which one is best for your case.
